Thanks to the efforts of a popular instructor, students
enrolled in adult literacy classes at Northampton Community College's Honesdale site can learn about resume writing, skills
needed in the workplace, and entrepreneurship through a new book collection established especially for them.
Hercules Invictus, a 501© non-profit corporation,
started a book giveaway in 2008 by donating books to local libraries and charities.
Each giveaway has a theme, with this year’s theme
being directed towards students in the Center for Adult Literacy & Basic Workforce Development.
The corporation
is looking for practical books that will help students build their resume and cover letters or teach them the steps to becoming
an entrepreneur.
So far, All 100 books and audio tapes for the Success
Library have been delivered to NCC's Wayne site. They fill a small bookcase in Room 203.
Thor, an adult literacy instructor at NCC’s Wayne
site who established Hercules Invictus, would like community members to continue to donate books throughout the year. "People
can always donate books," he said. "We’ll find a home for them."
Thor also encourages donations of science fiction
and books of heroic tales for younger readers. "We want to encourage reading and creative thinking," he said.
Hercules Invictus volunteers work closely with
the regional folklore society and with Hawley Public Library and Newfoundland Public Library.
Thor believes Hercules Invictus fits well into NCC’s
mission.
"I’ve always been pretty proud to work for NCC,"
said Thor. "I have a really firm belief in the mission here. And I really like to help out."
