Hercules
The Orphic Hymn to Herakles
A New Interpretation: Part I

Hear me, powerful Herakles untamed and strong,
to whom great deeds and mighty works belong!
Strong-man hero, helpful and benign,
of various forms eternal and divine,
throughout the ages, thou has earned our praise,
for thy protective, fierce and manly ways.
A champion, in many arts well skilled,
the avatar of human life fulfilled,
'tis thine, good victor, heroes to empower,
and ward oppressors off with thy stern glower.

Herakles

Inspired by Thomas Taylor's 1792 English translation of The Hymns of Orpheus

A Protective Charm

Herein dwells the son of Zeus,
Herakles the Conqueror.
Nothing evil may pass.

Used in the 3rd and 4th Century BC
