Backstory VIII

In 'Swords of Cimmeria Chapter IX: Sorcerous Siblings' it was revealed that the Acheronian lich Busiris and his Daughter-Wife Roxanne planned to raise Rune the Vampire God and restore  him to his former glory.

In 'Barbarian Legion Chapter I: Haloga Castle' Cael and the Barbarian Legion - on their maiden mission - accidentally free Rune's essence from a cauldron. The Vampire God aides them and then takes his leave.

In 'Barbarian Legion Chapter II: Minas H'rath' the Barbarian Legion's role in the lost tale recounted below is finally revealed.

Conan the Savage #4: The Wind from the Stars

King Conan seeks vengeance against the Brotherhood of the Spider. This foul cult dared send assassins against him.

Invading their desert citadel, Minas H'rath, King Conan and his troops slay the Brotherhood, but not before they've summoned B'eethra, a Chthuloid creature from the starless void.

A hooded stranger, weary from his long desert trek, arrives upon this scene. Rune, who has been restored to life but is still weak, attacks the tentacled horror. He is consumed by and then consumes B'eethra. Glorious in the fullness of his strength he seems unstoppable.

King Conan, who strove beyond his limits to triumph over the Vampire God in his youth, dispatches him quite easily in his middle years. Rune, conscious but in scattered pieces, is left in the ruins to rot.

In 'Barbarian Legion Chapter V: Revenge of the Spider Cult' we discover that Rune has managed to avert his doom.

Much earlier, long before Conan's reign as King of Aquilonia:

Conan #4 Marvel: Wicked Conjurings

Rune, a powerful sorcerer worshipped in the greater Cosmos as a Vampire God, finds himself on Earth during the Hyborian Age. The planet is full of contemptible human vermin whose essence can fuel his Soul Shards but Rune is still far from his full strength and thus vulnerable to attack.

Can anyone on this foul ball of mud defeat him before he can reap a Blood Harvest? Conjuring a Blood Pool to divine the nature of any potential threats, he espies naught but a young barbarian riding towards his lair.

Conan vs Rune #1: The Dark God

Having wrought bloody vengeance on the sorcerer Harach Gnar, Conan of Cimmeria makes his way towards Turan with hopes of selling his sword-skill to the highest bidder.

While investigating an abandoned city he is trapped by his greed and discovers countless scenes of mindless carnage. A dying man tells Conan a tale of a broken god called Rune who fell from the sky and was nursed back to health. Once restored he was lovingly adored... until he turned on them, slaughtering all who stood before him in a great frenzy.

In a courtyard reeking of decaying flesh and overrun by ravenous insects the Cimmerian faces the monstrous Celestial. After an epic battle and against all odds Conan triumphs. He purges the city of any remaining evils with cleansing flames then goes on his way.
