Chapter I: The Sons of Kiord
King Conan sends Aquilonian warriors to assist
the Kiordlings in reclaiming their underground city in the far North. Their former masters, the Sons of Brutheim, have re-taken
what was once theirs. The man-apes hate King Conan as in his youth he led the slave rebellion which left
the Brutes displaced and wandering. The Aquilonians battle the elements and run afoul of mountain yetis en route to the underground
city. Kiordheim, previously Brutheim, is actually a prehistoric city that predates both modern claimants. Who knows what secrets
it contains?
Chapter II: A Cold Reception
The grand entrance to Kiordheim lies in ruins
and seems to be no longer in use. A band of Vanir raiders, under the command of a War-Witch, have recently made the upper
level its home. While desecrating the Hall of Heroes they've provoked the wrath of a powerful Guardian Spirit. Our heroes,
after proving themselves to the Guardian, who they discover is Kiord himself, enlist his assistance, and that of Kiordheim's
other Guardians, in exterminating the Vanir. The Vanir War-Witch casts herself into the fissure from which she summoned
elemental creatures to battle the Kiordlings and Aquilonians.
Chapter III: Cleaning House
Rather
than descending into the lower levels of Kiordheim, our heroes decide to establish a powerful presence on the reclaimed
upper level. The scattered Sons of Kiord return and start rebuilding, the shades of Kiord and the other dead
Guardians are laid to rest and trade with Asgard and Cimmeria resumes. A request for reinforcements has been sent to King
Conan. From the fissure emerge creatures, both natural and otherworldly, that harass the builders. Our heroes defend the level
from these monsters as well as from the returning Vanir War Bands who recently laired there.
Chapter IV: The War-Witch
A party of Aquilonians descends into the fissure.
They battle a variety of creatures in the caves below, some mythical, and capture Vestla the Vanir War-Witch. She tells them
that they are all doomed and refuses to answer any of their questions. Kalanthes, the High Priest of Ibis and a friend
of King Conan, arrives with the Aquilonian reinforcements and takes custody of the Vestla.
Chapter V: The Defiled Temple
The Temple of the Kiordlings, though rebuilt,
has not yet been re-consecrated. Every attempt to do so has met with failure. Priests have sustained injuries and the
Ritual of Consecration has provoked poltergeist activity. Urestes, a Mitran Healer-Priest who arrived with the Aquilonian
reinforcements, attempts to convert the Kiordlings to the Light of Mitra. Alas, his prayers do not remedy the situation either.
Kalanthes' attempts provoke even greater unholy wrath. Vestla, clearly possessed, escapes. Our heroes, intent on solving the
mystery, are harassed and in danger of becoming possessed themselves. Below the altar, an ancient device is discovered.
Kalanthes manages to shut it off and all supernatural activity ceases. The Temple is consecrated. The Aquilonians discover
that their King is revered as a Hero of the Faith in Kiordheim.
Chapter VI: The Kingdom Below
Having successfully reclaimed the upper
level of Kiordheim, attention is finally given to the levels below. Our
heroes battle hordes of Brutes and suffer many losses on their road to victory. The level is reclaimed and there is much rejoicing
until Kalanthes discovers that the level was mostly occupied by Brute civilians, not warriors.
Chapter VII: The Undead Sorcerer
Aquilonian spies, disguised by Kalanthes'
sorcery, are sent on a mission to the Royal Level of Brutheim. It is being held by Ughrum and his loyal Brute followers. They are wrathful and indignant about the recent Slaughter of the Innocents on the
level above. They discover that the Vanir War-Witch now serves Ughrum and that Ughrum claims to serve Hissah Zul, a sorcerer
Conan defeated long ago. They find that Ughrum has made allies of the Dark Ones, a mythical race of metalsmiths and that he
seeks to resume production of arcane weapons for Hissah Zul's armies. The Aquilonians subdue the Brute sentries and the Kiordlings
and their allies invade the Royal Level.
Chapter VIII: The King Must
Die
The Aquilonian/Kiordling alliance
seeks to strike a powerful blow against their formidable foes by assassinating Ughrum. A small party, mostly Aquilonian, is
sent on this mission. As the battle rages in the corridors of the Royal Level our heroes enter the Palace through the Arena, freeing
captive humans, captive beasts and captive monsters en route to Ughrum's quarters. Ughrum's forces, focused on recapturing
the captives, leave their High Chief unguarded. Though Ughrum manages to escape, Vestla the War-Witch is defeated and slain.
Chapter IX: The Dark
Ones
The Kiordling/Aquilonian forces, assisted
by friendly barbarians from Cimmeria and Asgard battle the Dark Ones on their home turf: the hellishly hot foundries
that once served Brutheim's martial pride and Hissah Zul's expansionist aggression. Although aided by eldrich sorcery and
an inborn affinity with intense heat and searing flames, the artisans of the Dark Ones are no match for the fierce determination
behind the human might flung against them. They are forced to flee further underground.
Chapter X: Brutheim Falls Again
Driven to the lowest levels of their cavernous
citadel by the Kiordlings, the Aquilonians and their barbarian allies, Brutheim's forces put up a desperate fight. The Dark Ones assist the Brutes by fielding battle-sorcery and conjuring
an arcane portal. The last defenders of Brutheim fall, allowing their leaders to escape. Ughrum vows bloody vengeance
before disappearing through the portal. The Sons of Kiord, grateful to their allies, establish a treaty with Aquilonia.
Kalanthes, supported by a small Aquilonian force, remains in Kiordheim to study the city and its artefacts.
