Hercules has adventured widely and well in the Marvel Universe and has belonged to a handful of modern superhero teams over the years, most notably the mighty Avengers.

Back in the mid-1970s he played a prominent role in a Los Angeles based group, the Champions. The Champions teamed the son of Zeus with Angel, Black Widow, Darkstar, Ghost Rider and Iceman - an unlikely bunch of heroes. They had many over the top adventures together during their 17 issue run which often spilled into other Marvel titles.

The Champions Classic Volumes I and II gather together many of these action packed adventures of Hercules and his strange team mates. The Champions series is reprinted with most, but alas not all, of the crossovers. It was great to revisit tales that I first read in my youth, and so fondly remembered.

The New Labors of Hercules trade paperback collects the 2005 five-issue miniseries that chronicled the fall and rise of Hercules in modern times.

Hercules, the mightiest hero of antiquity, has become tabloid fodder, the 'Anna Nicole-Smith of the Super-Hero set'. His poor impulse control, indiscriminate use of violence and heavy drinking have made him an embarassment to the community of superheroes.

Enter Eurystheus and Achelous, enemies defeated in the Hellenic Heroic Age. They bring an offer of redemption: a new set of labors that will help Hercules reclaim his greatness as a Champion.

The New Labors are packaged as a reality show and televised, drawing the attention and displeasure of the other Olympians.

Hercules triumphs and is redeemed, but only after succeeding in the completion of each task and descending into his deepest private hells.
