Cities of Hyboria
by Bryan Steele
Thor: What's it like working
for Mongoose?
Bryan: Wonderful and stressful.
It is my dream job, but when real life gets in the way of deadlines and things begin to get mired, my office begins to feel
a little like a cell. Whether that is prison or an asylum...who knows. :) I love my job; I cannot say it enough. Our
schedule and deadlines and such get adjusted now and again by Matthew, especially when things happen elsewhere on the back
end, but we generally know what we are doing several months in advance - and when it is supposed to be done by. It's gotten
kind of hard for me recently trying to juggle a home-based career and a newborn, but I know it will get back to being fun
*and* easy again soon enough. The Goose has treated me well over the last four years and I know it will see me through this
strange new fatherhood thing. *laugh*
Thor: What's next for Bryan Steele? Is there a greater vision you're following into the future?
Bryan: I'd like to do a novel or
two in my non-existent spare time, or maybe even a screenplay. As far as game related...I have what I would consider a pretty
neat Zombiepocolypse RPG idea that I want to draw up, but my first priority is taking care of my son and staying on track
deadline-wise.
Thor: Is there any advice you can share with our readers who dream
of becoming published authors or working in the gaming industry?
Bryan: I have three things I can
share. First and foremost... although you are an artist, remember that you are working FOR someone else. If they want you
to change, cut or add something, do it. It is their money you are working for, after all. Secondly...you cannot please everyone.
There will always be someone who hates your idea, thinks you don't know what you are talking about, or cannot understand why
you chose route X instead of Y. Find a stance you want to take with a project and stick with it; as long as the results are
what you believe is right by the project, there will be gamers that will enjoy it. And lastly, try to be original...but also
remember the sorts of things that worked in the past. They likely worked for a good reason, and there is nothing wrong with
playing off of that to some small degree. I don't know if that will help, but it's what I got.
Thor:
How do you wish to be remembered? What legacy do you wish to leave behind?
Bryan: I just want people to remember
the fun they had playing games I had a hand in. My gaming friends and I spend a lot of time talking about old characters and
RPG events fromour past games, so I guess I just want other people to be able to do the same concerning the good times they
had playing my work. You know, "that one time when the carnivorous snails ate Jimmy" sort of moments.
Thor:
Do you have a website or online forum for your fans?
Bryan: I can eternally be contacted and talked to on our company
forum, www.mongoosepublishing.com/forum.php , or someone can drop me a line on my facebook (search Bryan Cp Steele). One of these days I'll put together a website for
myself...but these are probably easier ways to do contact me.
Thor: Thanks Bryan!
I look forward to talking to you again soon and wish you even greater success in all your future endeavors.
Bryan: Thank you! I hope I answered
all your questions well enough for your readers, and I look forward to hearing from them, too! Take care of you and yours,
mate!
